Articles in the Old Testament Tabernacle

THE BRAZEN ALTAR (EX. 27:1-8)
Immediately after entering the door of the outer court there was found an altar constructed of acacia wood and overlaid with bronze. Upon it was placed the sacrifice for the Bible teaches without the shedding of blood there is no redemption. The priest assisted in making the sacrifice for he would hold the creature while it was killed. The party then for whom the sacrifice was offered would place his hands upon the sacrifice and confess his sins. The animal then served as a substitute for his or her sins. This is a wonderful type of pointing to Jesus Christ for He is the Lamb of God who taken away the sins of the world. We must come to the cross and lay our sins on Jesus. The result is forgiveness and the right to enter in.
THE LAVER (Ex.30:17-31)
The Laver was a large bronze basin containing water. It was made from the bronze looking glasses of Israeli women(Ex.38:8). Nothing is said about its dimensions for it represents the Word of God. According to Matt. 24:35 the Word of God has no limitations. The Laver was a mirror according to James 1:22-24. One could look into its depths and determine the sin demanding cleansing. We all are as an unclean thing hence the need for the cleansing power of the laver. How shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to your word (Psalm 119:9) The Laver took away the dirt. The priests would come who were covered in blood, grime and dust for cleansing. Believers who are covered with worldliness an inward sin must come for the cleansing power.
COVERINGS AND CURTAINS (Exodus 26:7-14)
The tabernacle was really a tent. It was one hundred cubits in length and fifty in width. The outside was covered with badger skins. As a consequence the outside was rough, brown and unattractive. It reminds us the unsaved are not attracted to Christianity. T he second skin was made of ram and dyed red representing the blood. The third skin was of goat's hair, white in color, representing the purity of Jesus. Inside curtain was woven in colors of blue, purple, red and white. Throughout the curtain were interwoven Cherubim. It served as a ceiling for the Holy Place. The four colors remind us of Christ. His coming from heaven (blue), His blood (red), His perfection (white) and His royalty (purple).

The Old Testament Tabernacle

(Exodus 25:31-40)

I. Table of the shewbread (12 Loaves)
The shewbread represents the Word of God. We are to feed on the Word daily. From this daily feeding we gain our strength and sufficiency to fight the fight of faith.
II. Golden candlestick
The Golden Candlestick provides supernatural light. It represents Jesus who is the Light of the World. Each holder contained a pot of oil representing the provision the Holy Spirit makes for us.
III. Altar of incense
The hot coals were brought from the Brazen Altar and then the sweet incense was sprinkled there with the frangrance going up to God. Our prayers are like the incense (Rev.8:4)

The Three Pieces of Furniture teach us to feed on the Word, be filled with the Spirit and have an effective prayer life.

Introduction to The
Old Testament Tabernacle
Rev. W. Scott Lockard

I .God Is Always Specific (Ex.25-31)
When God gave Moses instruction to build the Tabernacle He was specific! Noah had a similar experience when told to build the Ark. God is always specific when dealing with His people. He leaves no doubt as to His intentions.
II.God Is Always Detailed (Ex.25:2-35:5)
The structure was to be 175' in length and 150' in width. The material requirements were 2400 lbs of gold, 8400 lbs of silver and 8400 lbs of brass. The fabric to be used was of finest quality: cloth of blue, purple, scarlet, fine twined linen, coverings of goats hair, skins of rams and badger or seal. It was further required to have Acacia wood (hardest wood known), precious stones (for the High Priest's vestments), olive oil and sweet spices.
III.God Is Always Demanding (Ex.36:5-6)
God uses people. He told Moses, "Have the people bring an offering". It was to be taken from the wealth obtained in Egypt. They brought so much they had to be restrained in their giving.
IV.God Is Always Selective (Ex.35:30-32)
He chose Bazaleel to serve as contractor. The man had an eye for beauty and detail. He was a skilled artisan. He was a gifted teacher. Most of all he was filled with the Holy Spirit.
V.God Is Always Accessible (Ex. 27:16)
The entire Tabernacle enclosure took nine months to complete. It was a fenced enclosure with curtains covering the entire structure. Seven feet high it was just above eye level. To see inside one must enter through the door. The gate of entry faced east and consisted of multi colored curtains;blue reminding us that God(Jesus) came from Heaven!; white reminding us of His purity and perfection; red reminding us of the necessary shed blood and purple reminding us of royalty and that He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

Gaining entrance required a blood sacrifice. The rich were to bring a bullock; the middle class a lamb or goat and the poor were to bring turtle doves or pidgeons. They were to be sacrificed and the blood to be sprinkled on the altar. This sacrifice was to be repeated yearly but the death of Christ was once for all. Consequently by His death we all may gain entrance"for whosoever will may come"!

Why people resist change
in Sunday School

1) They're content, satisfied with status quo-no matter how dangerous, outdated, or ineffective it may be.

2) They lack understanding. They just don't understand how change could produce the desired results.

3) They're not willing to pay the price they don't believe it would be worth the time, effort, money, or trouble.

4) They're tradition bound. Their motto: "That's the way we have always done it."

5) They fear a loss. We will have to destroy our old building, throw away our old Christmas ornaments, spend more money.

How to bore your class

1. Dominate the conversation.
2. Talk very slowly.
3. Talk very fast.
4. Talk without eye contact..
5. Talk "over their heads.'
6. Talk "under their intellegence."
7. Talk lots about yourself.
8. Talk in a monotone.
9. Talk without thinking.
10. Just talk on....and on....and on.
11. Somehow keep them Awake during all of the above.
12. Keep talking for several minutes after the final bell.
13. Call them "disloyal" and "backsliders" when they start attending another class.

What Sunday School
Means to me!

It Means fun! If Sunday School is the most boring hour of the week we have missed its purpose. We need to make it a lively fun time whether during class or preliminaries. Do whatever it takes to make it fun to come.

It means fellowship! Sunday School is a place to meet new friends. A place we can make wholesome acquaintances. A place to develop uplifting relationships.

It means faith! It's the place to enlarge our faith. The Place that we can grow and mature and Learn more about Jesus. A place to get our spiritual life all together!

It means Fruit! Increasing numbers, excited students, enthusiastic teachers. A growing, thriving productive church bringing forth new converts. Enlarging the roll expanding the outreach, sharing the message with all we can!

Tips for Teaching Adults

Teaching adults should be exciting and inspirational. If effective it will change them for the better! Here are four tips:

Tip One - Capture Attention - Get their attention immediately or you will lose it completely. Make a challenging statement or ask a thought provoking question!

Tip Two - Promote Participation - A basic law of leaving is involvement. Use projects, crafts and audiovisuals..

Tip Three - Emphasize main points - Teach a few significat ideas or concepts. Quality not quanityt is what you are seeking.

Tip Four - Apply lessons to life - Make it relevent. Make it apply in a practical way to everyday life.

Let us incorporate these principles into our Sunday School service. It will help us to create an atmosphere of growth! God bless your every effort in building a growing Sunday School.

It Bothers Me

As a pastor and former district Sunday School Secretary there are things that bother me. I suppose conscientious people should be bothered once in a while.

It bothers me when I see such a lack of vision for enlargeing the Sunday Schools. I realize the Bible teaches that without a vision the people perish. May I add that Sunday School disintegrates as well!

It bothers me that we can't develop a more innovative and practical program. We just don't change anything lest we upset the apple cart. I think a few apple carts need upsetting.

It bothers me when I see such shoddy preparation on the part of many teachers. To me teaching a class is a formidable task and it demands the best I can give. I am prepared to put hours into my preparation; what about you?

It bothers me when people attend Sunday School so sporadically. The up and down attendance patterns is baffling. I want to be there; how about you?

It bothers me when I see so little concern for absentees or visitors. I think they are worthy of a call, a card or a visit. With our lack of outreach, it is no wonder that few darken our church doorway!

It bothers me that people find our program format so unattractive that they don't care to return. I want to do something about that, don't you?

If these things bother you too, let's do something about them.

The Reason for
Sunday School

Why purchase costly Sunday School curriculum materials? Why plead for volunteers to serve as teachers? Why search for the best leadership to give guidance as Superintendents? There is only one reason and that reason is winning souls. The Bible declares, "He that wined souls is wise," {Pro. 11:30}. It is a fact the personnel of our Sunday Schools display great wisdom. Observe with me that they are:

  1. Wise in their choices of objectives - Priority one is winning souls. Their goal is too seek and save the lost. Nothing less brings satisfaction.
  2. Wise in their use of time - They live consistently with eternal values in view. They fully realize the lateness of the hour and the length of eternity! They are compelled to go into Samaria.
  3. Wise in their choices of values - These dedicated people realize the value of one's soul. To them that one is worth all of the effort, all of the frustration, all of the expense. The soul is worth the whole world!
  4. Wise in their choices of methods - These ingenious people are aware that methods change but the message never. Their approach is as varied as the individuals they share with!
This then is our reason for being. Let us reach out with every available means to win lost souls! Together we can do it!

Commitment to Excellence

This is not a commercial but sometime ago a leading manufacturer developed as a theme the following: The quality goes in before the name goes on. I like that and if our Sunday Schools are going to do the job we must get the quality in before the name goes on.

Of necessity ours must be a commitment to excellence! In every area excellence must be our emphasis.

Our Sunday School Superintendents should be making needed improvements to develop some innovative ideas and changes if necessary.

Our teachers should develop some enthusiasm and deepening concern for the students.

Our curriculum should be Bible based and particularly Wesleyan Oriented. [Every Sunday School should use Wesleyan Publications.]

Our programming should be updated and competitive with a world throwing every imaginative thing in our direction.

Our students should be committed to excellence in attendance and involvement in every program.

Our records should be thorough and leave nothing to be desired. At a moments notice we should be able to get an up to date account of attendance and enrollment. That's a real part of our responsibility list.

Our out-reach should be far-reaching and effective. it should be more than shoddy, haphazard and infrequent.

Our entire program should be geared toward the most productive, effective Sunday School possible. Remember if we intend labeling it
WESLEYAN the quality must go in before the name goes on.

Yours for bigger and better Sunday Schools,
Rev. W. Scott Lockard

Whatever It Takes to
Grow Sunday School!

A Growing, productive Sunday School is my first concern. Whatever it takes to bring that about I am willing to do. The following are some things it will take to bring it about!

It will take totally dedicated personnel. We must constantly emphasize to our staff the absolute necessity of their being at their best for God. Nothing shoddy about their attitude or actions or presentation.

It will take meaningful methods of gaining the interest of those who come. If things are so drab and dry that it would put you to sleep, don't expect them to return. Let us do something different to arouse some interest!

It will take a concerned outreach. Superintendents insist on having your staff make contacts and lead the way. The phone, a card or a visit will go far to show you're really concerned. It may be inconvenient; you may be tired but like Jesus "we must needs go through Samaria." It will take frequent program changes. Change the format of your lesson; change the preliminary aspect of your service; change your closing session making it interesting enough to draw the people back.

Let's do it! Whatever it takes to produce a thriving Sunday School, let's do it!

Yours for bigger and better Sunday Schools,

Rev. W. Scott Lockard

Sound Principles for
Sunday School Growth

As I see it there are some practical principles for the growing of a Sunday School. Here they are:
Principle 1: Innovative Teaching. It is so easy to get in a rut in our presentation. Change your methods frequently.
Principle 2: Diversified Outreach. A call, a card, a visit or whatever contact you care to make. Teachers, let your students know you miss them in ther absence.
Principle 3: Spiritual Preparation. You can lead no one higher than you are yourself. "Study to show yourself approved unto God!"
Principle 4: Faithful Support. For a successful teacher, attendance in the house of God is vital. You cannnot expect your students to atted regularly if your attendence is sporadic! Be there in your place as faithfully as possible!
Principle 5: Exciting Programs. Every aspect of the Sunday School program should be enthusiastic and exciting. If we fail to make the program attractive, it is not surprising that people won't return. There is just too much to get their attention elsewhere!
Principle 6: A Sense of Loss. Do we really believe people without Christ are lost? Are on their way to hell? If so we will do whatever necessary to side track them. To show them the right way.
Let us incorporate these principles into our Sunday School service. It will help us to create an atmosphere of growth! God bless your every effort in building a growing Sunday School.

Rev. W. Scott Lockard

Sunday School Teachers

1. They should be enthusiastic: After all if the teacher is not excited growth will not occur. When you go to the class do so with a lively step and a buoyant spirit!

2. They should never lack proper training in the word: Remember the teacher is there to instruct. To simply read from the quarterly is inadequate. Study to show thyself approved - Pray without ceasing!

3. They should have an interest in souls: Remember he that winneth souls is wise. To be so lack luster that people are turned off could mean their eternal destiny!

4. They should step out frequently to encourage absentees and potential enrollees: Remember needy souls are everywhere! You will find them in the gutter or the high echelons of society!

5. They should be organized: The proper introduction; A well illustrated middle and a eye catching ending. Your lesson should be such that pupils will look forward to returning!
In Jesus;
W. Scott Lockard

I can always get plenty of first violinists, but to find one who plays second violin with as much enthusiasm or second french horn or second flute, now that's a problem. And yet if no one plays second we have no harmony! Andrew was happy playing second fiddle.

THE HIGHWAY!

I JUST HEARD FROM GOD TODAY AND HE SAID,
"And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall
be called the way of holiness." Isaiah 35:8

Tucked away in the Old Testament is the gospel of Isaiah. Throughout his glorious book he attempts to draw a word picture of God's redemptive plan. His intention is to write the 'good news' in an understandable and readable fashion.

In Isaiah 35 he paints a pictures of the dramatic life of growth and abundance that comes to the child of God! In verse one he mentions that the barren life will begin to blossom as a rose. Verse two talks of an abundant life that is filled with joy and singing. How much like what Jesus said when he declared, "I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly." [John 10:10]

As you move through verse three you find a strength imparted that we might do the work of God. Also a deepening desire to pray becomes the passion of the child of God. In verse four he banishes fear from our hearts as is suggested in 2 Tim. 1:7 giving us the resources of power, love and a sound mind!

Moving further along in verse five our eyes are opened that we might see the truth of God and our ears are unstopped that we may hear the still small voice of the Spirit. In verse six we see the contagious enthusiasm and radiant joy that grips the heart of God's child. Then in verse seven an ever springing flow of living water transforms every life it touches!

Then Isaiah shows us where to walk in verse eight. He says, "And a highway shall be there." We step upon this highway as we experience the new birth; as we become new creatures in Christ; as we are redeemed by the blood! As we walk in this wonderful highway we are made more and more, conscious of our need of inner cleansing. The ’old man’ of sin rises up in indignation again and again. Finally to compensate for this ’defeating force’ we seek the Lord in a moment of total consecration and He sanctifies our hearts. Remember He saves us from our sins when we are born again and he saves us from ourselves when we are sanctified! At that moment we begin walking on the way of holiness. It is a narrow way and few there be that find it!

Isaiah describes it as a pure way [the unclean shall not pass over it - Verse 8]; He further points out it’s a practical way [wayfaring men - Verse 8] Then we see it is as a plain way [fools shall not err therein - Verse 9]. He says, It is a praise way [The ransomed shall come with songs - Verse 10]. Finally it is a prospective way [Sorrow and sighing shall flee away - Verse 10].

This way is open to all. If you are enjoying the blessing of sins forgiven why not enter the joys of the sanctified life. Remember Jesus said, ‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." [Matt. 5:8]

In Jesus;
