Access

"And I will give unto thee keys of the kingdom." Matt. 16:19

The Key wouldn't work! I attempted to start the car but nothing happened. Talk about frustrating. I had no access to the car and no way to move it.

It's like that when it comes to gaining access to heaven. If the key doesn't work or is the wrong one we can't get in. The key of access is called grace and thank God it is available. It comes by faith! Let us reach out and claim it.

Short Term Memory

"Remember His marvelous works that He hath done." Psalm 105:5

Like most of us Israel had a short memory span! She quickly forgot the marvelous way God delivered them from slavery; the way He opened the Red Sea allowing them to cross on dry ground; the way He provided shoes that never wore out. He proved to be all they needed but they readily forgot. We too forget where we were and how far He has brought us! How low we were and how high we have climbed! Lord help us to never forget!

Love Matters

"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us." 1 John 3:1

His love bestowed on Calvary included an excess of benefits: there is forgiveness of every past sin; there is cleansing that includes every carnal trait; there is healing of every disease; whatever our need it is provided by His love! I am truly glad for His love. How about you?!

You can stop giving me now!

"So the people were restrained from bringing." Ex. 36:6

You just never hear it! It never happens! I've never been able to say, "You can stop giving now! We have more than we need!" It happened one time though. Israel was so excited about the erection of the tabernacle that they couldn't give too much. They just kept coming and finally Moses restrained them! I Like that! Let us learn the art of giving.

The Power Company

"But as many as received Him, to them gave He power........" John 1:12

I love the word Power. It means authority! Authority to claim the Joy of sins forgiven; authority to realize the peace that passeth understanding; authority to sit in heavenly places in Christ Jesus; authority to leave the confines of this world for a world that knows no sin, sickness or disease; authority to dwell in a land that is fairer than day. Thank God the authority is extended to all who receive Him! Let's claim that authority. It's ours to claim!

Bow here or Bow there!

"That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow......" Phil. 2:10

The white knee, the red knee, the black knee, every knee! In Mark's gospel the leper came in an attitude of begging. Kneeling down on the dusty ground he said, "Lord if thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean."

Jesus said, "I will be thou clean." And He touched Him! Instantly the leprosy departed from him and he was clean.

I am glad I bowed before him and the leprosy of my sin was cleansed!

Launch Out!

"Master, we have toiled all night, and have taken nothing...." Luke 5:5

To a fisherman there is nothing more frustrating than fishing and catching nothing. It had been a bad night for Peter and his partners! To compound matters exhausted as they were they had to clean the nets.

Then as if to heap on the abuse Jesus came by. To Peter's knowledge Jesus was a carpenter. What would He know about fishing? No wonder he hesitated when the Master said, 'Launch out into the deep.' Didn't He know by this time the fish would be at the bottom avoiding the heart of the day?

Little did Peter realize that He who made the fish knew where they were! It is to Peter's everlasting credit that he declared, 'Nevertheless at they word I will let down the net.' The result was an abundance; compensation beyond their wildest dreams; more than enough and too spare!

That's just like Jesus! I am going to follow Peter and launch out in the deep. Won't you join me?

Rejected

".........and his own received him not." John 1:11

Rejected! It's a horrible feeling! It happened to me some years ago. I was living then in a state where car inspections were mandatory I took my automobile to the mechanic expecting a clean bill of health. To my surprise it was rejected and to compound matters the part need to fix it had to be ordered. As a consequence I had to go everywhere for two days carrying a sticker that said rejected.

Jesus was like that too. He poured out His love and they rejected Him; he provided them forgiveness and they rejected him; he offered them healing for there soul's need and they turned Him down! He was despised and rejected of men but thank God He left an opening for them to receive His grace - The scripture says; "We can receive Him and He will make us part of the family." I am going to do it now! How about you?!

Rumors

"Make known his deeds among the people." Psalm 105:1

Let's talk about Jesus. Everywhere on the pages of the New Testament His name was on the lips of the people - The Leper said, "He cleansed me!" The Woman taken in adultery said, "He forgave me!" The Blind man said, "He made me see!" The disciples came from the upper room and declared, "He purified our hearts!" His name is on my lips too for He has met my every need. His way is best!

"There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." Proverbs 14:12

'I did it my way,' so said Frank Sinatra in one of his classic hit songs. He did his own thing. We all do things to suit ourselves. Let's face it we are all guilty of pursuing our own agenda; of excluding God from our plans; of ignoring His will for us.

He does have a plan for us you know? If we can just find it we will be the happiest of people. I am glad I have found His way for me.

"But God, who is rich........" Eph. 2:4

Noah faced real obstacles in constructing the ark BUT GOD came and the prophet found grace in the eyes of the Lord!

Elijah stood up to the prophets of Baal without much of a choice BUT GOD intervened when the man of God called down fire from Heaven!

I was sinking deep in sin BUT GOD reached down and lifted me out!

Don't throw in the towel

"Man is born unto trouble......" Job 5:7

If anyone knew about trouble Job did! In a series of unanticipated disasters he loses all his wealth. Then suddenly his sons and daughters are crushed to death while partying in the eldest brothers house. Does Job rebel against God? No! He bows in submission! In scene two Job is physically afflicted and loses his health. Plagued by what appears to be a form of leprosy he is found among the ashes with his wife chiding him for holding onto his faith. Does Job throw away his confidence? No! Not on your life! He still holds fast his integrity!

We too will experience unexpected trouble but His grace is sufficient for us. Hold on child of God our troubles will soon be over!

Addiction

"...they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints." 1 Cor. 16:15

Addiction takes on many forms. Some are addicted to nicotine; they just can't break free of the smoking habit; some are addicted to alcohol; they just must have that wine or beer; some are addicted to gambling; they have got to be at the race track or gambling table.

Thankfully though there are those who have broken free by the power in the blood! They are still addicted but now they are devoted to Christ and His church. Their main focus is centered on Jesus and His people!

How about you and me? Are we addicted to Jesus?!

Prayer Changes people

"Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer....." Acts 3:1

The importance of prayer was not overlooked by the disciples. Having been in the company of Jesus for three years they observed the priority He placed on prayer.

He prayed when the storms raged on the sea and they ceased! He prayed when hunger gnawed at the stomachs of the crowd and they were fed from His hand. He prayed when the disciples huddled in the supper room desperately in need of strength and it came when they gathered in the upper room.

Prayer changes things but more importantly prayer changes people. I am going to follow the advise of the Lord and pray! Remember this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

A Good Shepherd

"For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." Eph. 3:14

Paul is an evangelist, a church planter, a teacher par excellent but first and foremost he is a shepherd. He is consumed with the needs of God's people. In Ephesians he is on his knees praying that they might know the riches of His grace; the strength of character He imparts; the indwelling presence of Christ; that they might know the dimensions of His love and the fullness of God.

He says "There are resources." There is a sufficiency." He wants them to enjoy all the blessings and benefits of being part of the family! Yes, I am a pastor at heart too! For I want that and more for my people. Help me Lord to be a good shepherd!

Resources! Provisions! Abundance! Wherever you see Jesus on the pages of the New Testament He is making provision for us. If we are sin sick He offers us forgiveness! If we are motivated by the carnal mind He offers us cleansing! If we are sick and suffering He brings us healing!

If we are down and out He offers us an abundance when He says, “Come and Dine!” What a meal they must have shared that day. One thing is certain they didn’t go away hungry! Speaking of being hungry I’m hungry too. I’m going to accept the invitation and feast at the table of The Lord! Why not join me!

The Party

"Bring forth the best robe......" Luke 15:22

The Prodigal had hit rock bottom. He couldn't get any lower. Just before he came to his senses we see him grubbing through the muck and mire of the pig pen looking for something to satisfy the cravings of his heart!

Suddenly he comes to the realization that even his father's servants have things better off then he does! At that point he decides to make his way back home. He doesn't know what to expect but things couldn't be any worse!

He makes the long trip with a confession on his lips. His father sees him coming and immediately plans a party.

He is to enjoy the best of everything. The best robe; not a hand-me-down! The best footwear; Dr. Scholl's couldn't begin to compare! The Best Jewelry; a signet ring! The best buffet with a grain fed calf! The bottom line is the father gave him the best. Our Heavenly Father gives us the best too. I am going to the party. How about you!

Old Fashioned Prayer Service!

"........but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him." Acts 12:5

There is something about an 'old fashioned prayer service.' We had one tonight. The spirit was so sweet and the anointing was so real! Heaven came down and glory filled my soul! When the church prays God moves. He came to the rescue when He sent an angel to deliver Peter. It didn't look good for James had already been executed. God, however, stepped in and the chains fell off his hands. Peter walked out of that jail with an angel for a guide! Prayer was made by the church! It works! It really does. Try it!

Down through the years I've known numerous shut-ins. It has been a great joy to visit them. There was the fine lady in upper state New York. She was nearly blind but composed poetry and always shared it with me! She blessed me more than I ever blessed her. Then there was Granny in Eden who was in her 90's. She still drove her own car. She was clear headed and sharp as a tack. What a joy to know her! Her insight and wisdom added so much to my life. It has always been that way! Intending to bless I was blessed. It really works! "And to know the love of Christ..........." Eph. 3:19

When I was a youngster Harry Truman came to our hometown as a part of his whistle stop campaign. We all went to see him. I knew about him but I didn't know him! I was just one of many in the same boat.

It's just not enough to know about someone we need to know them personally. That's how I feel about Jesus. I grew up in Sunday School memorizing scripture and learning Bible Stories. I knew a lot about Jesus but I just didn't know Him! It wasn't till that wonderful day [May 1, 1960] when at an altar He forgave my sins and made me part of His family! "Behold I make all things new.........." Rev. 21:5

The Best is yet to come! Those very special words grace our weekly bulletin. They are words of great inspiration spoken to me by the Holy Spirit following my triple by-pass surgery. I was experiencing post operative depression but God came to me and lifted my spirit by pointing out He was going to make all things new. A world free of sickness, disease and death! The Bood

"In that day there shall be a fountain opened.....for sin and uncleanness." Zech.13:1

The song writer said, "There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel's veins; and sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains".

With the death of Christ on the cross the blood sacrifice was made. A two-fold provision is ours! Every sin of the past is wondrously covered as we seek forgiveness. The guilt and condemnation is lifted as God comes in power to forgive.

Then in a moment of complete consecration the old nature is cleansed enabling us to live a sanctified life. I am glad I've felt the blood applied! You can too!

More than Enough (2)

"There is a lad here............" John 6:9

It was lunchtime. The crowd was restless and hungry. Stomachs were rumbling all over the mountainside. It had been a wonderful morning but now the multitude needed something to eat.

As always Jesus took note of the need. Our needs never escape His notice! Something needed to be done immediately. He turned to Philip the head of the Ways and Means Committee and asked about the condition of the treasury! As is usually the case they were experiencing a short fall! Somebody forgot to tithe!

Suddenly Andrew came along and said, "There is a lad here." The kid didn't have much, but little if much if God is in it. The bag lunch produced only five loves and two fishes but that was just enough! Jesus blessed that lunch and fed a multitude. He truly is the God of Abundance!

Grace beyond measure. Resources in abundance! Power over all the power of the enemy! He can save to the uttermost. His forgiveness covers a multitude of sins; His cleansing delivers from all that is unrighteous!

No matter the needs He provides an abundance! Fish were not biting and Peter came home frustrated having toiled all night. Jesus said, "I know right where they are at! Launch out into the deep." He did and there was such an abundance the ship nearly sank!

State of Contentment

"......for I have learned in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content." Phil.4:11

Evangelist Buddy Robinson was asked what state he resided in and he said, "the state of contentment." Well that's not Kentucky but it is a wonderful place to be. I think Paul had arrived at that place for wherever we see him on the pages of the New Testament he seems perfectly content. He and Silas are found singing praises in the prison house in the midnight hour. Now that's contentment! My prayer is that God will help me to be equally content wherever I find myself! To be equally content whatever my physical condition! To be fully satisfied if just my needs are met! To live in the state of contentment that's my plea.

A Day of Accounting

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they
watch for your souls, as they that must give account...." Hebrews 13:17

It is that time of year...........a time of accounting. As a minister in the Wesleyan Church it is my responsibility to present to the church body an account of my stewardship. Today I begin compiling the facts and figures of a year of service to be presented during our Local Church Conference. I've kept accurate records so it won't be a major problem. Upon presentation they have the authority to accept or reject the report. That's kind of disturbing but I can tell you something even more so and it is this: Someday I'll stand at the Judgement Seat of Christ and give an account of my stewardship; an account of deeds done in this body.. (Romans 14:10). It will be a fearful moment for I want to be found faithful above all else! By the way you will join me that day. Let us purpose in our hearts to be faithful in the few things that we might be ruler over many things.

It's Monday and I am rejoicing in the wonderful manifestation of God we saw in our church yesterday. What a wonderful place to be! It is Monday though and I need a day of Rest and Relaxation. A day away from the pressures of the ministry. If you are in the pastorate you need one too! This is the time I will do just what I want to do. It will be a time to unwind; to get a second wind and a new start for the week ahead.. Jesus reminded us, "Come apart and rest or come apart." I am going to follow His advice. You had better too. See you tomorrow.

The Pause that refreshes

Now Peter and John went up together.......at the hour of prayer." Acts 3:1

It's Wednesday and time for the pause that refreshes. Although I have numerous prayer times my very favorite is held in our church on Wednesday evening. There is something about the saints gathering for corporate prayer. God's Spirit moves among us in a unique way. He brings healing and help. As we pause and put aside the irrelevant He reveals Himself as the All Sufficient One. I can hardly wait to get there.

Mercy was Extended

"But God, who is rich in mercy...." Eph. 2:4

Mercy there was great! Again and again on the pages of the New Testament mercy was extended!
The leper came crying out in despair then mercy was extended and he was cleansed!

The blind beggar Bartameaus stumbling on the road didn't know which way to turn then mercy was extended and his eyes were opened!

The Impotent man couldn't make it to the pool for there was always someone in the way. Then mercy was extended and his crippled legs were healed!

The woman taken in adultery lay guilt ridden at Jesus' feet then mercy was extended and every sin was forgiven! Mercy was extended! It is abundant and free. I'm sure glad! Aren't you?!

A New Day

"This is the day which the Lord hath made; we
will rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24

It's Sunday and my favorite day of the week. In just a short while we will be in church. It is always an exciting time because we never know how God will manifest Himself. Some times He comes like a wind and blows away all the irrelevant things so we can focus on Him alone; sometimes He comes like an earthquake and really shakes us up; often He comes like a fire and cleanses us anew; and frequently He comes in a still small voice revealing to us His perfect will. We never know what to expect but it is always exciting. I can't wait to get there! How about you? If you like Sunday let us rejoice together.

How the Apostles Died
Written by Rev. W. Scott Lockard Bth

Those who were called to Apostleship sealed their discipleship with their blood. Here is the record according to tradition:

1. Matthew suffered Martyrdom by being slain with the sword at a distant city of Ethiopia.

2. Mark expired at Alexandria, after being cruelly dragged through the streets.

3. Luke was hanged upon an olive tree in the classic land of Greece.

4. John was put in a caldron of boiling oil, escaped death miraculously, and was banished to Patmos.

5. Peter was crucified at Rome with his head downward.

6. James the Greater, was beheaded at Jerusalem.

7. James the Less was thrown from a lofty pinnacle of the temple, and then beaten t death with a fullers club.

8. Bartholomew was flayed alive.

9. Andrew was bound to a cross, whence he preached to his persecutors until he died.

10. Thomas was run through the body with a lance at Gromandel in the East Indies.

11. Jude was shot to death with arrows.

12. Mattias was first stoned and then beheaded.

13. Paul, after various tortures and persecutions, was at length beheaded at Rome by the Emperor Nero.

Such was the fate of the apostles, according to traditional statements. If called upon would we be willing to seal our faith in blood? Just how committed are we?

Never Again
Written by Rev. W. Scott Lockard Bth

Never again will I confess, "I can't!" for "I can do all things through Christ which strengthenth me." Philippians 4:13.

Never again will I confess lack, for "My God shall supply all of my needs according to his riches in Glory by Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19

Never again will I confess weakness, for "God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of Power, and of love, and of a sound mind" II Timothy 1:7

Never again will I confess doubt and lack, for "God hath given to every man the measure of faith." Romans 12:3

Never gain will I confess weakness, for "The Lord is the strength of my life." Psalm 27:1

Never again will I confess the supremacy of Satan over my life, for "Greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world." I John 4:4

Never again will I confess defeat, for "God always causeth me to triumph in Christ Jesus." II Corinthians 2:14

Never Again will I confess worries and frustrations, For I am, "Casting all my cares upon Him for He careth for me." I Peter 5:7

14 Ways to Kill Your Church
Written by Rev. W. Scott Lockard

1. Don't Come!

2. If you come, Come late.
3. Come with a grouch!
4. If you serve; Serve with Laziness.
5. At every service ask yourself, What do I do to get out of this!
6. Never accept and office. Better to stay outside and criticize.
7. Visit other churches about half of the time to indicate to your pastor that you're not tied down.
8. Let the pastor earn his money; Let him do all the work!
9. Sit pretty well back and never sing. Don't smile either.
10. Never encourage the preacher.
11. Never pay in Advance, especially for religion.Wait until you get your money's worth.
12. It is good to tell of your pastor's failing to a stranger that may happen by; They might be a long time finding out.
13. If there are a few zealous members in the church make a protest against the church being run by a clique!
14. If your church unfortunately happens to be harmonious, refer to the unity as indifference of lack of zeal, or anything at all except what it is.

Let us avoid these things at all costs!

I Just Heard From God Today and He Said,
"Behold now I know......" 2 Kings 5:15

Facing the ravages of leprosy Naaman had relied on a strange gods for sustenance! From the first moment the blemish appeared he had  fallen fast. The condition had worsened rapidly and every effort to call on his gods proved useless! In desperation he cried out for help!

Finally his help comes from the strangest source. A Hebrew maid who waited on Naaman's wife heard of his plight. Having had dealings with the prophet Elisha she recommended his abilities to Naaman's wife. She in turn passed them on to the courageous head of the Syrian Army!

Approaching the King as an act of desperation her asks for assistance in approaching the foreign dignitary. It is granted him along with a letter of authorization and gifts of money and clothing. Having relied on strange gods for so many years he assumes that those in the Samaria will be all that will be available. Little did he know he would be introduced to the God of Elisha!

After the ranting and raving of the Samaritan King he is convinced no help will be forthcoming. It looks very bleak but he is bent to be introduced to Elisha whose God of all Gods. He is the all sufficient one. The I am! I am all that you need!

Having heard of the prevailing circumstances Elisha offers a solution! He declares, "Just have them come to me." Upon his arrival he is instructed to go and wash in the River Jordan. It is a bitter pill to swallow. At first he refuses the invitation but desperation knows at his heart. With no other solution available he turns to the God of Elisha. Following instruction he dips seven times and a miracle of miracles his flesh comes again as the flesh of a little child and he is clean.

As he steps upon the shore he cries out, "Behold now I know." Now I know the God of Elisha He is God! Now I know He is the the "all sufficient one." We too can experience first hand the resources of the "All Mighty God" of Elisha.

God is For Me!!!

I Just heard from God today and He said,
"…………this I know; for God is for me." Psalm 56:9

From an early age David tended the flocks of Jesse. He was deeply conscience of God's presence as he stood defiantly against a lion and a bear. Even then he declared, "for God is for me."

Later when Samuel began the selection process to determine who would be the new king. He finally concludes that David is God's choice! From the hill sides of Judea he enters the home of his father where he is anointed. Again he concludes, "for God is for me!"

As he grows into manhood he is given added responsibility! Among those is a trip to camp of the enemy. His brothers are facing the prospects of a future battle with the enemy. The only obstacle in their path is a 9 foot tall giant named Goliath. While cowering in the field their brother David comes from the home bringing news for the young men!

While there David has a confrontation with the enemy. Goliath issues a challenge to anyone who will stand up against him! David accepts the challenge sensing the presence of the Lord! After convincing the King he can do it he steps onto the battlefield with nothing more than a sling and five stones.

After the ranting and raving of Goliath David declares, "I come in the name of the Lord." With one stone he brings the giant down. Much later he penned the words, "For God is for me." He is for us too!

For such a time as this #1

I Just heard from God today and He said,"Thou art come into the kingdom for such a time as this." Esther 4:14

From the time of Adam and Eve's fall from grace things worsened. Following Cain's murder of Abel wickedness flourished expanding throughout the world. Society was at a loss seeking someone to solve the crisis.

Suddenly on the scene came the man called Noah. A just and righteous man in his generation he was just what God was looking for He had come to the kingdom for such a time as this!

God had a plan and Noah was just the one to initiate it. Calling Noah into His presence he laid out the blueprint for the salvation of mankind.

During the construction of the Ark Noah proclaimed the promises of God. Any who would enter in would be saved. A time period of 120 years elapsed during which Noah faithfully declared the truth.

It is my contention that much laughing and scoffing was heard outside the ark! Of the total congregation none accepted the offer of entry. Violence continued to escalate the family was ushered into the ark and as predicted the rain began to fall!

The finality of it all is heard with the crash of thunder as the "door was shut." Excluded were those who ignored the offer! At that point there was no point or possibility of entry.

Noah was the man for such a time as this. It has always been that God has one for "such a time as this." For our generation such a one is the Lord's Jesus. He has made a way for us! Let us seek the Lord while He may be found and call on Him while He is near!

For Such A Time as This #2

I Just Heard From God Today and He Said,
"Thou art come into the kingdom for such a time as this." Esther 4:14

Out of this wilderness comes one who has the briefest biographies. He immediately speaks out under the authority of God declaring a drought to be forthcoming. To avoid a conflict with Ahab he is instructed to hide by the brook Cherub where he will find water and food to eat!

After remarkable provisions satisfying every need Elijah has a confrontation with Ahab. It is decided that all of Israel be called to Mt. Carmel where they will be challenged as to their intentions. Posing the question "How long halt ye between two opinions?" Elijah gets no response at all!

Laying out a plan including both sides Ahab is to bring the prophets of Baal [450] and the prophets of Astoreth [400] and Elijah a group of one. Gathering on the Mountain they set up an altar. Seeking for a fiery outpouring the Baalites spend the day in a frenzy of Pleading. They go as far as to cut themselves with knives. Even Elijah scoffs at their inability! When they prove unsuccessful Elijah steps in.

Saturating the altar and the trench surrounding it he prays a simple prayer. No frenzy, no frustration, no failure. In sixty-three words the fire falls! Another evidence of one called to the kingdom for such a time as this.

It had always been so that God appointed one to fill the bill. To step into a crisis situation and meet the need presenting itself! Maybe you are here for such a time as this!
